Larchmont
The schools that inspired parent-founded schools across LA
As Larchmont’s Founding Educator, Dvora was the only non-parent volunteer. She designed the K-6 educational program while attending Stanford’s Graduate School of Education, receiving input from professors and educators across the country. The petition embraced constructivism, project-based learning, and teachers as curriculum creators. Staff at LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) joked that they had never seen a charter with so many citations.
The school opened with students in grades K-2 in September 2005.
Three years after the opening of Larchmont Charter School, the demand for the school was so great that Lindsay Sturman led another group of founding parents, to create a K-8 school. “LCW” (Larchmont Charter School, West Hollywood) shared LCS’s educational philosophy, placing a similarly high value on student-centered learning and empowered, creative teachers.
LCW opened in the fall of 2008, merging with LCS five years later to enable all elementary school students to attend Larchmont’s High School.
